Sound is a travelling wave that is an oscillation of pressure transmitted through a solid, liquid, or gas, composed of frequencies within the range of hearing and of a level sufficiently strong to be heard, or the sensation stimulated in organs of hearing by such vibrations.

What is a good solution for recording quality sounds in the world?
Q. I'm looking into a project which would incorporate dialogue, and requires background sounds to create atmosphere for the tracks. I have the equipment to record the dialogue, but it's hard to get clean sounds in a mall, or near a river, or footsteps walking. What's a good way to get these sounds so that they can be incorporated into the project? Mainly, every solution I've thought up leaves the sound too garbled or ends up overrun with the slightest breeze blowing into the device.

A. A windscreen for your mic will help eliminate wind or breeze blowing into it. That's what you see with those little foam fiber covers on the end of it. They're acoustically transparent for audio frequencies, but keep direct pressure off the pickup element. (Also useful for people who tend to POP their "P's".)

How much do you think your phone voice sounds like your real voice?
Q. Rate it, 1 as sounds nothing like it and 10 as in sounds exactly like it.

A. About 3. My voice does not sound the same on the phone, or in recording which are similar as it does when I hear it. Try the old trick of cupping one hand around your ear and the other round your mouth to make a sounding "board" and it will often come as a surprise.

How do I turn the sounds for the computer back on?
Q. I recording something by mistake, and when I pressed the F keys at the top of the keyboard to try and stop recording, I realized I deleted the sounds for the computer. Now I can't even hear the music I play on Windows Media Player or I can't hear the voice on Youtube. Does anyone have a solution?

A. I'm not sure what program you could be using that has F as a hotkey for mute or whatever, but have you checked your volume settings? Go to the system tray (bottom right of your screen, the icons near the time) and look for the volume icon. Click it once to open up the volume bar, twice to open up the volume settings (among other things). Check if you have anything muted.

Sound is the vibration of matter, as perceived by the sense of hearing. Unwanted or annoying sound is often called noise.

  • Which is more musical, a truck passing by a factory or a truck passing by a music school?
    • John Cage, "Communication", the third of the Composition as a Process lectures given in Darmstadt in 1958 and published in Silence. Many of Cage's works use sounds traditionally regarded as unmusical (radios not tuned to any particular station, for instance): he really did believe that the sound of a truck and the sounds made in a factory had just as much musical worth as the sounds made in a music school. There is also a suggestion expressed in the quote that in order to determine the artistic worth of something, it is necessary to examine the context in which it exists.
  • A sound does not view itself as thought, as ought, as needing another sound for its elucidation, as etc.; it has not time for any consideration--it is occupied with the performance of its characteristics: before it has died away it must have made perfectly exact its frequency, its loudness, its length, its overtone structure, the precise morphology of these and of itself.
  • Music has no subject beyond the combinations of notes we hear, for music speaks not only by means of sounds, it speaks nothing but sound.
    • Eduard Hanslick, quoted by Wolfgang Sandberger (1996) in the liner notes to the Juilliard String Quartet's Intimate Letters. Sony Classical SK 66840.
