The World Wide Web (commonly abbreviated as "the Web") is a system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the Internet. With a Web browser, one can view Web pages that may contain text, images, videos, and other multimedia and navigate between them using hyperlinks. Using concepts from earlier hypertext systems, the World Wide Web was started in 1989 by the English physicist Sir Tim Berners-Lee, now the Director of the World Wide Web Consortium, and later by Robert Cailliau, a Belgian computer scientist, while both were working at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1990, they proposed building a "web of nodes" storing "hypertext pages" viewed by "browsers" on a network, and released that web in December. Connected by the existing Internet, other websites were created, around the world, adding international standards for domain names & the HTML language. Since then, Berners-Lee has played an active role in guiding the development of Web standards (such as the markup languages in which Web pages are composed), and in recent years has advocated his vision of a Semantic Web. The World Wide Web enabled the spread of information over the Internet through an easy-to-use and flexible format. It thus played an important role in popularizing use of the Internet. Although the two terms are sometimes conflated in popular use, World Wide Web is not synonymous with Internet. The Web is an application built on top of the Internet. From Wikipedia under the

From Google News Search: "WWW" How can i change the internet settings to not require typing www? Q. Suddenly my computer will only let me type web page names if i start them with www. if i dont it a window pops up and says that it cannot find what ever page i want. this has never happened before and i have no idea how it happened. Does anyone have any idea how i can change it back? its really annoying having to type www before every web page. thanks. Asked by spookyfish06 - Mon Jul 9 01:15:46 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I just type the main part of the url and then use the CTRL+ENTER shortcut to put the www.&.com part in. For exapmle for google I would type in google and then hit CTRL+ENTER. It is very convenient. Answered by Sean W - Mon Jul 9 01:20:19 2007 Do you believe that there is an alternate www being developed? Q. I've heard that but the details are sketchy at best. It is being developed in parallel with the exsisting www and when launched will be more secure. Security is the issue. Any comments? Asked by longpointbeach - Thu Mar 6 15:41:48 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. There are so many technologies that make up the web that it is being constantly developed all the time. The Internet is not an 'off the shelf' product, and cannot just be redesigned simply by any one organisation. There are numerous technologies being developed right now to keep the web functioning with newer demands, for example IPv6 is starting to take over as the main form of network communication and path determination (routing) protocol on the net. This does bring about more security features but certainly isn't secret. Replacements for HTTP have been in the works for ages, techology such as CSS and AJAX (mixture of Javascript and server side scripting really) will eventually take over as the lead presentation language. Q. The website for the organization that I work for has this problem and I would like to fix it. When I go to the site with the www at the beginning it works fine, but when I don't type it, it takes me to an 'under construction' page. This is only a problem when I am on their network. But I have noticed this problem going to outside sites from our network. Is this an internal issue? Thanks in advance!! Asked by adam n - Thu Aug 21 17:03:21 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Need to set the .htaccess file to point to either or set the server to do the same. Typing "www" as part of the domain name is not needed on a properly set up server. I normally just type the domain name and press Ctrl + Enter if it is a DotCom type. There are other browser shortcut keys depending if domain name ends in "net", "edu", etc..
