How does Social Security work in terms of additional income?
Q. I know that you are allowed to make a certain amount of money and not get taxed. If you go above that amount you are taxed. If you are working full time will they stop your payments the following year? This is something that I heard, that you can start and stop Social Security. What happens if you win a large sum of money? Will they stop Social Security?

A. I don't think they will automatically stop social security for any reason, but your tax levels might make SSI benefits less beneficial. The payments you get will be dictated by: How much you paid in (they factor your best 35 years) and when you first started to collect. Currently you have options to collect starting at 62, 65 and 70. If you start at 62, you get substantially less, not a good option overall if you live past 75. Your best options may vary based on state, income, etc, and a social security agent will be able to give you a response unique to your finacial situation, work history, and health conditions.
