A. The World Wide Web is a so-called "service" of the Internet. A good analogy would be that the Internet is to "automobiles in general" as the World Wide Web is to a "Toyota". You can have Internet access and not use the World Wide Web, but you cannot use the World Wide Web without Internet access. The "Internet", with a capital letter "I", refers to the global collection of connected networks that we use for communications. The "World Wide Web" refers to the process of sending and receiving web pages or other files via HTTP. Most Internet traffic is caused by other uses of the Internet, such as DC++, BitTorrent, FTP and email.

Why does typing "www" before a domain take you to a different site or take you to an error page?
Q. The website for the organization that I work for has this problem and I would like to fix it. When I go to the site with the www at the beginning it works fine, but when I don't type it, it takes me to an 'under construction' page. This is only a problem when I am on their network. A. Need to set the .htaccess file to point to either or set the server to do the same. Typing "www" as part of the domain name is not needed on a properly set up server. I normally just type the domain name and press Ctrl + Enter if it is a DotCom type. There are other browser shortcut keys depending if domain name ends in "net", "edu", etc.. Ron

A. I don't know Google Apps and don't work for them. But this technically gets done usually both in the Web Server configuration and DNS. In Apache Web Server it is a "ServerAlias". In DNS it's just another "A" or Address Record in the configuration for that domain name. mail, and ns, and other such prefix names are also done in dns. To the person that said CNAME - that's supposed to be generally a bad idea. The "A" record is better. If you want to know why - ask another question about "Why CNAME's are Bad?" and drop me an email or such and I'll come answer it.
