What is the difference between the Internert and the WWW?
Q. I'm not computer illiterate (I got here, didn't I?), but have never really understood the difference between the Internet and the WWW. And is anyone in charge of managing these institutions, or are they self-perpetuating? Thanks.
Asked by Bill W - Tue Oct 27 12:54:17 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The World Wide Web is a so-called "service" of the Internet. A good analogy would be that the Internet is to "automobiles in general" as the World Wide Web is to a "Toyota". You can have Internet access and not use the World Wide Web, but you cannot use the World Wide Web without Internet access. The "Internet", with a capital letter "I", refers to the global collection of connected networks that we use for communications. The "World Wide Web" refers to the process of sending and receiving web pages or other files via HTTP. Most Internet traffic is caused by other uses of the Internet, such as DC++, BitTorrent, FTP and email.

A. If you are a true novice and don't want to spend much time learning how to make a site, I would suggest the current super-popular MySpace. You can quickly get your information up for all your friends to see. If you are interested in something more, but still fairly simple try GeoCities or Yahoo. If you are willing to learn HTML I would suggest ATSPACE.COM. You can create a website for FREE up to 50MBs in size. I have two websites through them and the uptime is great. NO ADS. You'll need an ftp program to upload your stuff. There's a good free one for personal use called "FTP Explorer". Of course you'll either need to learn HTML or use one of the WYSIWYG programs like FrontPage or DreamWeaver to actually design your site. e-mail me if you… [cont.]

Why does typing "www" before a domain take you to a different site or take you to an error page?
Q. The website for the organization that I work for has this problem and I would like to fix it. When I go to the site with the www at the beginning it works fine, but when I don't type it, it takes me to an 'under construction' page. This is only a problem when I am on their network. But I have noticed this problem going to outside sites from our network. Is this an internal issue? Thanks in advance!!

A. Need to set the .htaccess file to point to either or set the server to do the same. Typing "www" as part of the domain name is not needed on a properly set up server. I normally just type the domain name and press Ctrl + Enter if it is a DotCom type. There are other browser shortcut keys depending if domain name ends in "net", "edu", etc.. Ron

How to make my website accessible without the "www"?
Q. I have registered my URL through Google Apps with ENOM. I am unable to access the my website without the www prefix. How do I go about enabling access without the www.
Asked by me.deathmetal - Fri Nov 28 02:56:40 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I don't know Google Apps and don't work for them. But this technically gets done usually both in the Web Server configuration and DNS. In Apache Web Server it is a "ServerAlias". In DNS it's just another "A" or Address Record in the configuration for that domain name. mail, and ns, and other such prefix names are also done in dns. To the person that said CNAME - that's supposed to be generally a bad idea. The "A" record is better. If you want to know why - ask another question about "Why CNAME's are Bad?" and drop me an email or such and I'll come answer it.

A. Usually, it indicates an individual server serving a website. For a large website, one server might not be able to handle every user who might try to access the site. Also, if that one server fails, nobody can connect to the site. Yahoo, for example, probably has 100 or 1000 web servers all serving the various parts of the Yahoo site (although their setup doesn't require www38.yahoo.com). The www38 simply indicates which server is serving the request. It means more to the website than it does to the user. Usually, www, www1, www999 are all the same thing. That's the basic answer.
