A computer is a machine that manipulates data according to a set of instructions.

Although mechanical examples of computers have existed through much of recorded human history, the first electronic computers were developed in the mid-20th century (1940–1945). These were the size of a large room, consuming as much power as several hundred modern personal computers (PCs). Modern computers based on integrated circuits are millions to billions of times more capable than the early machines, and occupy a fraction of the space. Simple computers are small enough to fit into a wristwatch, and can be powered by a watch battery. Personal computers in their various forms are icons of the Information Age and are what most people think of as "computers". The embedded computers found in many devices from MP3 players to fighter aircraft and from toys to industrial robots are however the most numerous.

The ability to store and execute lists of instructions called programs makes computers extremely versatile, distinguishing them from calculators. The Church–Turing thesis is a mathematical statement of this versatility: any computer with a certain minimum capability is, in principle, capable of performing the same tasks that any other computer can perform. Therefore computers ranging from a mobile phone to a supercomputer are all able to perform the same computational tasks, given enough time and storage capacity.

How to set up a computer network for three computers?
Q. We have 3 computers at work and are trying to connect them all together so that one can be the main server and the other two can dump files into it. It is okay if they are all open because we are on a secure network. As long as we can dump files into each others computers. One of the computers is running Vista and the other two are running XP. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A. They are only secure if NONE of them have Internet access. If this is so then the inexpensive, and very secure way is to network them together using network cables joining at a "Hub"(simply put - a dumb router) or a router. The router is easier, but if it has wireless, you will have to disable it(wireless) to prevent access from others. You may have to take some time to configure firewall and or antivirus software to allow access to all PC's on the network. You can actually turn off all firewall software since you will have a secure network. But I would advise leaving Anti-Virus running.(it can also prevent network access)

What percent of computers recycled still work?
Q. I want to find information about computer recycling. One piece I can not find reliable info on is what percent of computers recycled/donated are able to be refurbished and resold (within the US). The numbers I have found are <2%, 10% and 50%.

A. i'd guess that 50% or more can be salvaged. however, it's extremely difficult to find an operating system that will run very well (ie not be slower than a nematode) on older, slower, machines. i would think that there should be a market for an operating system that has less function, and uses fewer cpu cycles. unfortunately, such a system may well not be profitable. a) because people will simply copy it and not pay, or b) because people will not find the lack of much of the current function acceptable.

A. ok Assuming that you know how to put a password then just do it but if you don't well just go to run then type cmd it should take you to a black dialog box then just type in ipconfig then is should give you a Default Gateway it should be something along the lines of 192.168.1.1 but some time not exactly well just type that number in you internet browser and then just find something likesecurityy then just have wep code for a more simple way and there you go but since i am a funny guy just turn on the sprinklers while his on the front lawn he wont come back
