A society is a body of humans generally seen as a community or group of humans - or other organisms of a single species - that is outlined by the bounds of cultural identity, social solidarity, functional interdependence, or eusociality. Human societies are characterized by patterns of relationships between individuals that share a distinctive culture or institutions. Like other groups, a society allows its individual members to achieve individual needs or wishes that they could not fulfill separately by themselves, without the existence of the social group. Society, however, may be unique in that it is ontologically independent of, and utterly irreducible to, the qualities of its constituent individuals. As a reality sui generis, or "of its own kind", it is emergently composed of social facts that often hinder rather than help the pursuits of the subjects that form its physical and psychological underpinnings.

More broadly, a society is an economic, social or industrial infrastructure, made up of a varied multitude of individuals. Members of a society may be from different ethnic groups. A society may be a particular ethnic group, such as the Saxons; a nation state, such as Bhutan; a broader cultural group, such as a Western society; or even a social organism such as an ant colony.

The word society may also refer to an organized voluntary association of people for religious, benevolent, cultural, scientific, political, patriotic, or other purposes. Sociology is the study of society and social behavior.

How has society s responsibility to individual needs changed in the last 10 years?
Q. How has society s responsibility to individual needs changed in the last 10 years? What do you think the role of human service workers will be in the future?
Asked by Nezbit - Tue Apr 29 20:35:41 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Today, the individual is more important than ever. 10 years is a very short time, so I can't cite a documented shift during that time. But people are not marginalized or left out because of individual differences as much as they used to be. For example, people with disabilities are being acknowledged and accommodated for their individual needs these days. 50 years ago, they would lump all children with disabilities (whether mental or physical) in the same classroom and give them a second-rate education. I think that society's responsibility has changed in that we care less about the good of the community. People no longer sacrifice themselves, or at least they're not quiet anymore if they're being ignored. Instead, we care about if our… [cont.]

What effect on society will there be if our magnetic poles flipped?
Q. Throughout Earth's history, the magnetic poles have periodically flipped, i.e. magnetic north goes to the South Pole and magnetic south goes to the North Pole. I read that we will soon be passing through the plane of rotation for the Milky Way, and I hypothesize this might trigger our poles to flip. What kind of effect could this have on our society, considering are increasing reliance on electronic devices?
Asked by Mercer Devil - Tue May 13 02:56:37 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, first of all the Earth's magnetism will o to zero before flipping. This will mean complete depletion of the ozone layer, and cosmic rays will pass right through the atmosphere. The moment you step out of the house, you will look like "an overcooked pizza" to quote Bill Bryson. The Earth's magnetism does flip once every 500 million years or so, but there are enough lucky survivors to prevent extinctions.

What is it about the society in Singapore that makes people stressed and unhappy?
Q. What are your views on the society or cultural problems/issues in Singapore that makes Singaporeans stressful, unhappy and dissatisfied with life?
Asked by ThUNDeRLuN - Wed Aug 20 11:24:28 2008 - - 6 Answers - 3 Comments

A. I guess its all started with MONEY and the culture of trying to be better then others as the 2 root cause. Everyone is chasing for money in a way.. Almost 90% of singaporean is in some form of financial debt or loans to pay. Housing loan, car loan, bills, daily expenses, credit card bills, etc. constant striving for better job with higher pay, urging kids to better school to get a degree for better job, Also tight gov rule are not helping. too much control with little or not outlet for common folks to let off steam. Every measure from Gov have to do with money by playing our vanity..owning cars and upping erp. owning lift that goes to every floor..getting larger homes.. basically, there is no safety net available to common folks...no job… [cont.]

Keep out of our village.
